Lenten Disarmament Vigil- BIW
The Lenten Vigil for Disarmament begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14, Saint
Valentines Day, when we will gather from 11:30 to 12:30. across from the
Administration building of Bath Iron Works on Washington Street and then walk
down the street to leaflet the workers at the shift change . We witness against the
continued production of the Aegis guided missile destroyers here at BIW by
General Dynamics.
The Vigil for Disarmament continues every Saturday in Lent:
February 17 and 24 and March 2, 9, 16, 23 and Holy Saturday March 30. With the
reality of the war in Gaza in which so many innocents are being slaughtered with
our complicity, we recognize that the building of these warships, whose missiles kill
indiscriminately, are a preparation for war which robs us of the ability to address
the many needs not being met here in Maine and around the world. It is a war
against the poor, a Crime against Humanity, a crime against Peace.
We need to repent and turn away from the Idolatry of the false god of militarism. True
security comes not from our military industrial complex but from our ability to live
justly with our sisters and brothers and to share our resources equitably. Each
warship built keeps us from the Love needed to heal our Mother Earth.
Disarmament (Resurrection!) calls us to turn away from warships and instead to
begin the healing of the many crises that surround us. Please bring signs.

Public Hearing on Juniper Ridge Landfill contract extension
Public Hearing on Juniper Ridge Landfill contract extension on Thursday,
Feb 15th, 6-8pm, in Brewer.
Casella Waste Systems, the private operator of the state owned Juniper Ridge Landfill in Old Town, is seeking a six year extension of their state contract while they apply for a 40% expansion of the current landfill.
For over two decades, area residents, including the Penobscot Nation, have continued to shine a light on harmful environmental impacts from the landfill, including on the Penobscot River, and questioned the for-profit model that has increased the importation of out-of-state waste, straining landfill capacity.
The State of Maine Department of Administrative and Financial Services Bureau of General Services will hold a public hearing regarding changes to its Operating Services Agreement (OSA) with Casella to allow a contract extension on Thursday February 15th from 6-8pm, in Brewer, at Jeff's Catering.
There is not currently a plan for the Bureau to stream the event, but if that changes they will issue a notice and post on their website. Sunlight Media Collective plans to stream on Facebook Live.
Written comments can be submitted to the Bureau of General Services by Monday February 26th, at 5pm.

Brooksville- Martin Luther King Jr Memorial Celebration
Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Celebration
Many cultures believe that ceremony is the way we remember to remember. It is in this spirit that we at RFS will once again celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 15th at 4 pm. The gathering allows us to dedicate our time and our attention to honor his prophetic words, his courageous actions, and his lasting legacy.
Rob Shetterly will also be sharing the stories of several persons whose portraits he has painted for his Americans Who Tell the Truth series, with a focus on the power of courage to create change in our broken world. Rob will be unveiling the portrait of John Alston at Swarthmore College on the weekend of January 13th – founder and director of the Chester Children’s Chorus. This inspiring story will also be told at the RFS memorial celebration!

Close Guantanamo Rally and Vigil
Please join us to vigil and rally on Saturday,
January 13, 2024 at 1:00 -2:00, to mark the 22nd year anniversary of
the Guantanamo Bay prison. We will vigil in front of the Augusta
National Guard Armory, at the intersection of Route 202 and Armory
Street, and then rally with speakers , singers and more.
Our message is simple: Shut Down Guantanamo. According to the
ACLU, since the prison opened in 2002, 780 prisoners have been held
there, including 21 children. More than 86% of those prisoners were
sold as prisoners to the U.S. for a bounty. Currently, 30 remain
imprisoned, 19 of which have never been charged with any
crime or offense. 16 of these 19 were cleared for release more
than 2 years ago but remain imprisoned.
We join in Commemorating Jan. 15, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. And in solidarity with the March on Washington to demand Immediate Ceasefire! in Palestine.

Advent Vigil for Disarmament at Bath Iron Works
As light gives way to darkness, we stand with hope at the Advent Vigil for Disarmament at Bath Iron Works on the 4 Saturdays of Advent, December 2, 9, 16 and 23 from 11:30 to 12:30.
We gather in front of the Administration Building at Bath Iron Works on Washington Street in Bath and then walk down to leaflet the workers at the shift change. General Dynamics continues to build the nuclear capable Aegis guided missile Destroyers which launch precision guided missiles which kill indiscriminately. As we can all clearly see, the innocent suffer in these wars that continue raging in Ukraine and Gaza. The question, What about the children? must be answered. The time has come to open our eyes to the reality that the continued building of warships prevents us from using our resources to heal the many needs of our Mother Earth. This constitutes a Crime against Peace and fuels endless wars.
Let's Prepare for Peace this Advent as we recognize that all children are as precious, as vulnerable, as in need of mercy, as the child we await in Advent. Convert BIW to build something that promotes life through Disarmament Now! NO MORE WAR !! Smilin' Trees Disarmament Farm 763-4062
