Lenten Disarmament Vigil- BIW

  • Bath Iron Works 700 Washington Street Bath, ME, 04530 United States (map)

The Lenten Vigil for Disarmament begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14, Saint

Valentines Day, when we will gather from 11:30 to 12:30. across from the

Administration building of Bath Iron Works on Washington Street and then walk

down the street to leaflet the workers at the shift change . We witness against the

continued production of the Aegis guided missile destroyers here at BIW by

General Dynamics.

The Vigil for Disarmament continues every Saturday in Lent:

February 17 and 24 and March 2, 9, 16, 23 and Holy Saturday March 30. With the

reality of the war in Gaza in which so many innocents are being slaughtered with

our complicity, we recognize that the building of these warships, whose missiles kill

indiscriminately, are a preparation for war which robs us of the ability to address

the many needs not being met here in Maine and around the world. It is a war

against the poor, a Crime against Humanity, a crime against Peace.

We need to repent and turn away from the Idolatry of the false god of militarism. True

security comes not from our military industrial complex but from our ability to live

justly with our sisters and brothers and to share our resources equitably. Each

warship built keeps us from the Love needed to heal our Mother Earth.

Disarmament (Resurrection!) calls us to turn away from warships and instead to

begin the healing of the many crises that surround us. Please bring signs.
