The Lenten Vigil for Disarmament begins on Ash Wednesday, February 22 when we gather across from the Administration building at Bath Iron Works on Washington Street,
and then walk down the street to leaflet the workers at the shift change from 11:30 to 12:30.
We witness against the continued production of the nuclear capable Aegis guided missile destroyers here at BIW owned by General Dynamics.
The Vigil continues every Saturday in Lent: February 25, March 4, 11, 18 , 25 and
April 1 and Holy Saturday April 8 to remember the Aegis Plowshares , whose
witness 32 years ago on Easter we hold in our hearts .
We recognize that the building of these warships, whose missiles kill indiscriminately, are a preparation for war which robs us of the ability to address the many needs not being met here
in Maine and around the world. It is a war against the poor, a Crime against
Humanity. We need to repent and turn away from the Idolatry of the false god of
militarism.
True security comes not from our military industrial complex but from our ability to live justly with our sisters and brothers and to share our resources equitably. Each warship built keeps us from the Love needed to heal our Mother Earth. Disarmament (Resurrection!) calls us to turn away from warships and instead to begin the healing of the many crises that surround us.
Please bring signs.
