SPEAKING PEACE in a WORLD of CONFLICT
This fall, Peggy Smith, co-founder of the Maine Nonviolent Communication Network, invites Bangor area residents to gain practical skills in authentic communication through the 8-part series, Foundations of Authentic Communication. Based on the work of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) creator, Marshall Rosenberg, this course will show participants how to create more connection in their daily communication and how to listen with empathy. Foundations of Authentic Communication will meet Mondays, Sep 22 - Dec 1, at the Peace and Justice Center, 170 Park Street, Bangor.
Course participants will practice new ways of identifying and expressing needs and will gain tools to stay connected to their compassionate nature. “NVC teaches us how to release judgments of ourselves and others and how to speak more authentically from the heart,” describes workshop facilitator Peggy Smith. “I chose to devote myself to offering this process because it has brought deep healing for me personally, and in just one weekend I have seen connections and healing in countless workshop participants.”
NVC helps bring greater harmony and joy to the world, as it works to both prevent and resolve conflicts. Smith explains, “NVC helps us connect to those we love the most, as well as to people we think are very different from us. The practice of peace and of violence both begin in the language we use. With greater self-awareness, we can foster calm and understanding even at times when we feel stressed or ‘triggered’ by the words or actions of others. These skills can help us cultivate peace in our families, in our work place, and in our communities.”
This series is open to participants of all skill levels, including those with little or no previous knowledge of NVC, and is highly recommended to all individuals, couples and groups seeking to improve skills in communication and conflict resolution.
