Through Chalmers Johnson, the best-selling author of “Sorrows of Empire” we know of the vast U.S. military empire with perhaps over 1000 military bases in foreign lands and in 130 countries. These bases come at enormous cost to U.S. citizens, but to the host nations as well, for they, the bases, are virtually unaccountable; unaccountable for environmental degradation, for sexual violence and other human rights violations. The most egregious of offenses has been the dislocations of native populations to accommodate our installations. Three compelling examples are those of the people of Thule, Greenland, the Chagossians of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, and the Bikini Atoll people of the Marshall Islands.
Dud Hendrick, a member of Veterans for Peace and adjunct professor of Peace Studies at UMO, through travel and correspondence, has come to know some of these victims and has committed to amplifying their voices. Through video and slides he’ll share the heart-wrenching sorrows of empire he has heard and seen.
