Peace and Justice Center Film Series

Update! The next film in our Fall 2007 series is the superb documentary about the Dixie Chicks musical group, “Shut Up and Sing”. Join us on Sunday December 23 at The Peace & Justice Center, 170 Park St., Bangor, 7:00pm! (Originally scheduled for December 16, but postponed due to snow storm.)

Sunday September 23, 7:00pm
We are showing the highly acclaimed 2007 film “War Made Easy” narrated by Sean Penn. It exposes a 50-year pattern of government deception and media spin that has dragged the United States into one war after another from Vietnam to Iraq.

Sunday October 21, 7:00pm
The 2006, Sundance Grand Jury Award- winning film “Why We Fight” is built around President Eisenhower’s 1961 farewell address about the dangers of the “military industrial complex.” While exploring a half-century of U.S. foreign policy, largely shaped by corporate interests, the film also portrays dramatic personal stories after 9/11 and with military recruitment.

Sunday November 18, 7:00pm
Filmmaker Tom Jackson will be on hand to show his film, “Out of Balance” on the overwhelming scientific evidence for the climate change crisis. This alarming film shows how ExxonMobil, the world’s largest corporation, continues to assert undue influence on governments, media, and citizens, while making record profits and distorting climate science.

Sunday December 23, 7:00pm
For a dramatic change of pace, “Shut Up and Sing” by two-time Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Barbara Kopple and Cecilia Peck, chronicles the lives of the Dixie Chicks from 2003, starting with “the incident” criticizing George Bush, to the start of their 2006 tour. (Originally scheduled for December 16, but postponed due to snow storm.)

Our Fall 2007 Series will take place on Sunday evenings at 7:00pm, at the Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine, 170 Park Street, in Bangor. There is no admission charge. If you require childcare, call at least several days ahead of time so that we can make arrangements.
