Fall 2009 Film Series

All events are 7 p.m. on Sunday evenings at the Center, 170 Park Street, Bangor.

SEPTEMBER 20: RETHINK AFGHANISTAN
President Obama has repeatedly said that Afghanistan is “the good war” and has escalated U.S. commitment with no end in sight. Director Robert Greenwald’s latest film, “Rethink Afghanistan” focuses on the human and financial costs and challenges the notion that Afghanistan is “the good war.” Instead, Greenwald argues troop escalation threatens to entrench America in an unwinnable, unwanted war that only further empowers the resurgent Taliban.

OCTOBER 25: CAPITALISM HITS THE FAN
Richard Wolff on the Economic Meltdown

This new film is a superb introduction allowing citizens to comprehend and react to the current economic crisis. With breathtaking clarity, Wolff breaks down the root causes of today’s economic crisis, shows how it was decades in the making and reflects failures within structures of American-style capitalism itself. Wolff argues convincingly that more fundamental change will be necessary than the current government bailouts, stimulus packages, and increased market regulations.

NOVEMBER 22: CUT AND RUN
Made by Maine filmmaker Richard Searls and narrated by Marshall Dodge, this film portrays working conditions in the Maine woods: corporate ownership and exploitation of land and labor; mechanization of work and loss of jobs; effects on mental and physical health of labor; tensions with imported Canadian labor; and struggle for better wages and better livelihood. Beautifully filmed, this is an important part of Maine history and its current relevance.

DECEMBER 13: THE U.S. VERSUS JOHN LENNON
The U.S. vs. John Lennon is a compelling and provocative look at John Lennon’s transformation from beloved musical artist to anti-war activist to iconic inspiration for peace who spoke truth to power. It also reveals the true story of why and how the U.S. Government tried to silence him. The film will also show that this was not just an isolated episode in American history but that the issues and struggles of that era remain relevant today.
