End the War. Build the Peace. September 29th, Bangor

End the War. Build the Peace. September 29th BangorJoin us for an “End the War/Build the Peace” rally and ceremony on Saturday, September 29th at 1:00 p.m. at Paul Bunyan Park in Bangor.
Do you find yourself fighting back tears as you read about more death and carnage in Iraq each day? Maybe you just stopped watching the news or reading the paper because it’s just too painful. Do you wonder what else you can do to help stop the war and occupation of Iraq and redirect funds to rebuilding Iraq and our communities?

On a day when actions are planned for Washington, D.C. Lets come together in Bangor to share the power of our united grief, anger and hope. After a short rally with speakers and music we will hold a ceremony to mourn all the Iraq war dead. Folks will either lie down to represent the dead or will stand as mourners. Bagpipes will play. We will read the names of some of the US and Iraq war dead. Bells will toll.

Then we will rise up with signs and symbols representing what we want instead of war – health care, housing, education, a clean and sustainable environment, cooperation, etc. Bring what you would like to share. Area choirs will help us sing together to affirm our commitment to peace and our vision for a sustainable future.

Come and bring along friends and family to make an ever-stronger non-violent statement for peace and for an end to the occupation and war in Iraq. If you are near enough, you might consider walking, biking or boating to the event to raise awareness about the need to create a sustainable environment to prevent future wars. If you are a distance away, you may want to have your own ceremony in your town in the morning and then join us in Bangor in the afternoon. Let us know if you plan to do this and we will help get the word out about those actions as well.

Please sign on to a signature ad to appear in the Bangor Daily News the week before the event. This will be an invitation to our friends and neighbors who may not have been involved before to join us on this day. A contribution of $20 would help us pay for the ad, but feel free to contribute whatever you can afford. Send your check made out to Peace & Justice Center, write “signature ad” in the memo line, and mail it to 170 Park Street, Bangor ME 04401.

Lets show each other and politicians that they need to listen to us because of our strength of conviction and our numbers.

    Hi,

Looking forward to the Sep. 29 rally. Wondering why there will not be a march through town again this year. This was so powerful and large a turnout of people that got viewed by many people. The various characters (bush, cheney, rice) and participants in that parade made it such a success…not to mention the moving procession of all of those coffin banners of which I was one of the fortunate ones to be carrying. Thanks for all you do in this “war against this war.”

I’m checking on an answer, Blain. Sorry I didn’t see your question right away. For others, please post any questions here and I will make sure they get quick answers.

In asking people to contribute to the BDN signatory ad that’s to be published a week before the End the War! Build the Peace! rally, several people have asked for the wording in the ad. Could you publish that on this website?

    Natalie
